I have twenty years of leadership experience in major organisations, including Hewlett-Packard (France), the National Health Service and the National Institute for Health Research. I studied improvement theory at Warwick University Business School, leadership at Ashridge Business School and innovation at INSEAD Business School (Paris).

I have an ILM 7 (Institute of Leadership and Management) Certificate in Executive and Senior Leadership Coaching and Mentoring. I teach "Leading in Complexity" as a faculty member of the NIHR's national Advanced Leadership Programme.

For many years I have developed my skills as a leader of teams working on transformation programmes, particularly with a focus on working in the space between the people who need to use systems and the people who build or transform systems. I have a particular interest in self-managing teams and leading through influence rather than control.

As an example of my leadership work, I was an executive in the National Institute for Health Research during the Covid-19 pandemic. As interim CITO, I was part of the team that, under intense pressure, organised the UK government’s urgent research response, successfully recruiting more than one million participants to Covid treatment and vaccine research. Throughout this time I retained my role as a voluntary wellbeing support leader, looking after my colleagues and the health of my organisation.

Now that I work as a coach and mentor, I can bring my experience and skills together to support senior leaders going through major personal and organisational transformations. Working as a coach with PHSO, this could help leaders to manage the day-to-day efficiently to free up energy to work on strategy. As well as to feel more confident in their leadership abilities.

TESTIMONIALS

"Change is difficult at the best of times. Change when the world is changing around you needs a change not just in the way you think, but in the way your team thinks. Stephen coached us as a group through the need to change and helped us come to a consensus on priorities for us to implement. His experiences were at all times authentic and relevant to the challenges we face, and his style brought the best out of the team. We've been left with several tools to enable us to work better with complexity and we couldn't recommend Stephen enough for team coaching."
